OUR OPINION | The Romanian private electric train sets SOFTRANS – or HYPERION - produced in Craiova provide at the moment the best train services in Romania. At the time being they operate on the railway lines Craiova – Bucuresti – Brasov and Craiova – Bucuresti – Constanta.
The tickets are cheap compared to state CFR and can also compete with coaches on the same distance. For instance the one way ticket Bucuresti – Constanta costs 40 lei, a CFR train 62 lei and a coach in general 50 lei. And more important, the trains are modern and has clean toilets also adjusted for disabled people, soap, a hand wash dryer and a plug-in for hair dryers or shaving machines. Compared to the horrible toilets on CFR trains this is a wonder. In addition trains have wifi in each wagon and a coffee machine. And plenty of plug-ins everywhere for charging your phone or tablet.
Further on trains have a friendly and smiling staff who sell tickets on the spot with portable printers. You can book a selected seat online in advance and pay in the train or online. Seats taken are labelled with the sticker “Reservat”
Their web page is at the moment just in Romanian strangely enough, but one may understand the booking system with a little help from google translate. However, an English version is missing. Also a lot of local people where we live – in the Constanta area – do not know about the service – so promoting the service in local media is obviously also a task ahead. Anyway: A rail travel with Softrans is highly recommended!
